Very few traditional Ibicenco fincas (farmhouses, or peasant dwellings) have been left untouched in Ibiza, as investors, architects and constructors have snapped them up to transform into super villas over the past few years. Can Bassó is a simply stunning exception, a project orchestrated by Belgian property expert Francisco Dimmers alongside architect Amélia Molina from Ibiza, with utmost love, care and respect to the design and building traditions of yesteryear, subtly fused with high-end elements of contemporary minimalist living.
Each of the beautiful bedrooms – some were former stables in their previous incarnation, others entirely new builds – could easily be a bedroom in a stylish boutique hotel, each with its own uniquely designed ensuite. Think wooden ceilings where each and every beam has been handcrafted to fit in harmony with one another; perfectly formed windows and skylights delicately playing with natural light, perfectly complemented by chic, exposed hanging bulbs and quirky decorating details such as the use of goat skins hung from Sabina pegs, an industrial style sinks and tubs, wardrobes painted the exact shade of olive to match the tree outside the window.
Modernity truly comes into play in the kitchen and living areas at Can Bassó, where state-of-the-art technology is discreetly hidden within cabinets built into walls and former barn doors, and floor to ceiling glass windows serve to highlight the stunning exterior view. The swimming pool – presided over by an ancient, twisted olive tree – glistens like a natural pond, perfectly reflected in the windows of the finca and a beautiful outdoor dining area is set upon former railroad tracks, sanded back to their original hue. A perfectly manicured lawn echoes the clean, sleek lines of the pool and concrete decking area surrounding it, contrasted by the wild, colourful countryside surrounding it. Peasant life has never looked so appealing!
